The Champions League draw has pulled out some truly mouth-watering ties in the last 16. Arsenal have again been drawn against Bayern Munich much to the chagrin of almost every Gunner out there.
While Paris Saint-Germain will take on Barcelona in another stand-out tie. Manchester City have, on paper anyway, been given a great tie as they take on Monaco while Leicester will face off against Sevilla. Who will prevail in the Champions League last 16? Here’s who we predict will in the ties.
MANCHESTER CITY VS MONACO
After being embarrassed by Leicester on the weekend, many are questioning City’s title credentials. Guardiola never won the Champions League with Bayern and will hope to take City one step further than they did last season and into the final. Monaco stand in their way and while they impressed against Spurs, aren’t a match on paper for City’s relentless attack.
Winners: Manchester City
REAL MADRID VS NAPOLI
Borussia Dortmund edged out Madrid in the group stages but Zinedine Zidane will not complain about the draw handed to him. With Gareth Bale out of the picture for now, Madrid’s attack can be stifled if you can find a way to contain Cristiano Ronaldo which still remains no small feat. Napoli will fancy their chances on the counter, but this should be a straight forward tie for the holders.
Winners: Real Madrid
BENFICA VS BORUSSIA DORTMUND
Dortmund impressed in the group stages as they overcame Real Madrid to top their group, handing them a relatively easy draw on paper with Benfica. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang remains the key to Dortmund’s success as the pacey striker is regarded as one of the most dangerous in world football. Having only scraped through their group, Benfica will be right up against it but Dortmund’s pace and power will surely be too much.
Winners: Borussia Dortmund
BAYERN MUNICH VS. ARSENAL
Just like they were in 2014, Arsenal have been drawn against Bayern Munich in the last 16 – it’s definitely the tie of the round. Arsenal are a different beast with Alexis Sanchez the main striker now at the Emirates and are arguably more balanced thanks to the additions of Shkodran Mustafi and Granit Xhaka. Bayern, however, are still as strong as ever and will be considered the favourites. That being said, we think the Gunners have something about them this season and can be big players in both the Premier League and Champions League.
PORTO VS JUVENTUS
Juventus will fancy themselves against Porto for a place in the quarter-final. The Serie A champions cruised through the group unbeaten, led by leading marksman Gonzalo Higuain. Porto struggled against Leicester and it’s hard to see them progressing against a significantly better opposition.
BAYER LEVERKUSEN VS ATLETICO MADRID
One of the more interesting ties of the round sees Leverkusen take on Atletico Madrid.Greizmann is the star name on show in this one as he looks to take the reigns and carry Atletico through to the next round. Leverkusen are a tough team to break down and beat, as Tottenham learned, but Atletico should have enough in their locker to progress.
Winners: Atletico Madrid
PSG VS BARCELONA
Neither side wanted this game in arguably the tie of the round. PSG will look to patiently break Barcelona down with Edinson Cavani being the most likely bet for a goal. However, Barcelona with Messi, Suarez and Neymar are just too much for even PSG to handle.
SEVILLA VS LEICESTER
Leicester’s fairytale continues as they topped their group to reach the last 16. Jamie Vardy’s first goals in 16 games will hopefully help him find form over the next few weeks and months. Ranieri’s side have caught teams out this season in Europe but Sevilla, who have won the Europa League three years running, have great experience of high-level European football and should be able to see off the Foxes.
