But you met me acting in the church drama and you said you like what i do!! How come you don’t want me to pursue my dreams?

HUBBY: You can’t go into acting as a profession!!!

Me: But why, i have a gift. I need to harness my gift, what is wrong with that?

HUBBY: It seems you are no more interested in this marriage!!

Me: Excuse me!! What does that mean?

Guess Iyke, how are you? I do not know if writing you is the best thing to do but i just feel like letting out steam here..

INTRODUCTION

I have been with the drama dept in my church for over 3 years now. My husband is also a worker in my church but he is an usher.

As a matter of fact we did our workers training together(that was actually how we became friends). After the workers training i joined the drama dept, in fact it did not surprise my husband as he always called me “drama queen”. He said i “dramatize everything”…lol

WE GOT MARRIED

We were very friendly before we began our workers training and it we started courting during our training and eventually got married about 5 month after our workers training.

HE ALWAYS COMPLIMENTED MY ACTING

While we were courting and even while we were married, my husband always compliments me each time we present a drama in church. I am a good actress, that much i know. I have on many occasions been invited to act for my church on a national level. In fact on 2 occasions our head Pastor called me out and prayed for me that my acting shall take me beyond the shores of Nigeria.(My husband was very happy..i must add).

I STUDIED THEATER ARTS IN SCHOOL

Iyke in fact, i studied theater arts in school out ot passion and not because i could not get a course like law or medicine. I opted for theater arts as a first choice and hoping that one day i will become an A-LIST actress.

WE ARE MARRIED FOR 3 YEARS AND WE HAVE A SON

To answer your question, we have been married for 3 years and we have a beautiful son. (I am trying to keep the story as short as possible as you suggested).

I have never worked since i left school. In fact, i got married to my husband about the time i finished my youth service and i got pregnant almost immediately after we got married so domestic activities got a better of my time.

I AM READY TO PURSUE MY PASSION

Guess Iyke, i am good at what i do; that much i know. My mothers’ elder brother is a movie producer. He was our chairman during our wedding and he has offered me roles severally in some Nigerian movies.

He did not offer me a “waka pass role”!!! I have been offered good roles where i will act along Nollywood star actors and actresses. But my husband just will not allow me!!

MY HUSBANDS’ARGUMENT

HUBBY: You can’t go into acting as a profession!!!

Me: But why, i have a gift. I need to harness my gift, what is wrong with that?

HUBBY: It seems you are no more interested in this marriage!!

Me: Excuse me!! What does that mean?

HUBBY: How many actors and actresses in Nigeria have stayed in their marriage(s)? Are you not in Nigeria!! How many of them have broken homes? You want to go and start exposing your body to the whole world? You want to go and be doing romance on TV?

Me: I can’t believe that you are saying that in this age and time. Are you implying that there are no real Christians who are actors? Does your statistic say that all actors and actresses have failed marriage(s)? Why are you talking like this? But you met me acting in the church drama and you said you like what i do!! How come you don’t want me to pursue my dreams?

HUBBY: I do not have a problem with you acting in the church drama but there is a lot of prostitution going on in the movie industry. If you want us to remain married, you better forget that your acting thing….Period!!!

Me: But how can i just limit myself to this small pound? Only acting in church!!…He was no more listening…He had walked out on me…

We have had this argument over and over. I don’t know what to do. I am really confused. I love acting, it is my passion from when i was a child; even my mum says how i used to stand in front of a mirror as a child, carrying a doll on my back and be play-acting..I really do not know how to fix this.

GUESS IYKE’s COMMENT

Thank you so much for writing. I appreciate so much.

I don’t think there is any rocket science in this one. It appears to be a simple case of – “Your marriage” VS “Your career”.

It’s a good thing that you still have a platform in church to still showcase what you have and i think you should continue on that platform and see what doors that can open for you from that platform…it might be your door way to your El Dorado

I strongly believe that any acting opportunity that comes from the church will be one that your husband will embrace. “Going against your husbands’ wish might have dire consequences”.

Thank you for sharing your TRUE STORY with GUESS IYKE. I wish you the best in whatever decision(s) you make plus please look out for comments on this thread. God bless u plenty.
