Topic – Would you prefer a “yes man” employee or an employee that tells you “hard truth”?

Key notes: Many employers subconsciously “play God” without even knowing that they are doing it. For this reason, they surround themselves with ‘yes men” employees.

Let us look at this critically: “yes man” employee or an employee that tells you “hard truth”? Which will you personally prefer and why?

I would prefer to employ two employees, one who tells me yes in admin and the other who is a professional who tells me the hard truth.

The truth is, i need both. I need a cheerleader who tell me oga, that idea is awesome. Lets do it. At the same time, i need someone who has a different perspective, who would tell me oga, this idea might fail because of this and that. Then i take his criticism as feedback and modify the plan.

But if i have to choose, i would pick the hard truth employee. Why? I already have a cheerleader in my wife. Thanks

I would definitely prefer an employee that tells me hard truth. I think most people respect the truth even when they’ll get mad after hearing it.

Sometimes we get carried away with our decision not knowing we are going astray and in a business.. too many mistakes spells doom..


We can’t know all… and even when i feel like a pro and I get corrected by a “novice” at the end of the day i become grateful for having someone to correct me. Most times our ideas and decisions are right… but they just need (allow me to use) “polishing” If we always believe we are right then something is wrong.

I’m not saying every correction should be taken but there is what we call constructive criticism.. which in turn lets us see our errors.. if the correction doesn’t offer a working solution then its not a correction to me.

Majority of people may tell you that they prefer an employee that tells you the ‘hard truth’ but sincerely, can you handle it?

Often times the ego of ‘I pay his/her salary,why should he/she go against me’ comes up almost all the time an employee defies an employer.

As for me also,i will love to have an employee that tells me the ‘hard truth’ BUT, I will also work on handling it.

Would you prefer a “yes man” employee or an employee that tells you “hard truth”?….Someone actually sent me this as a TRUE STORY.

First let me describe a “yes man” employee : An employee when you say jump, says – how high? An employee that carries out all your instructions without asking questions. An employee that never offers his/her own opinion to whatever you say. An employee that allows you make all the decisions and believes his/her only job is to execute whatever you decide. If today you say paint the horse green, he/she agrees, if you say the next day the horse will look better pink, he/she agrees. An employee that just never offers his/her own opinion regardless of the situation. Now that is your “yes man” employee.

There is this other kind of employee that always tells you the hard truth, especially when they see things differently in relation to the subject.

So in answering the question ( Would you prefer a “yes man” employee or an employee that tells you “hard truth”? ), i will definitely prefer the one who tells me the truth but with conditions (1) In telling me the truth he/she should never be confrontational or challenging. (2) In telling me the truth he/she should never ridicule my opinion (3) In telling me the truth he/she should never contest my opinion in the presence of other employees.

So i think the key lies in the “how he/she tells me the hard truth”. Let us face it; i stand to gain the most if what my employee is telling me is right. In the end if there is success from what the employee tells me, the glory comes to me and not the employee.

So why would i want to surround myself with YES MEN employees that see (right) in everything i do even when i’m obviously wrong. They be like “what’s my own?”.”Month end, i collect my salary”…..naaaaaa. I will end with one of my quotes;

“You are unique not because you have all the answers. You are unique when you are able to accept opinions superior to yours regardless of who they come from”.
